A Southern Pacific manifest train heads west on track 1 at Yuba Gap on Donner Pass on April 3, 1989. Leading the 100+ car train is EMD SD40T-2 No. 8336, commonly referred to as a Tunnel Motor, one of 222 such diesels on SP’s roster in the eighties. This photo was taken from the top of the east portal of tunnel 36, in the distance is tunnel 35. Track 1 was removed in 1993. Donner Pass is located in the Northern Sierra Mountain Range nine miles west of Truckee, California.
