CSX train B709 passes the historic former B&O station at Point of Rocks, MD on a sunny May 7, 2020. Leading the 30-car train are two 40+ year old EMD diesels, Nos. 2001 and 2556. On the point is CSX GP38-3 No. 2001, delivered to Penn Central in 1973 as their No. 8124, which later became Conrail No. 8124. This engine underwent upgrading by CSX to GP38-3 standards and was renumbered. Trailing is GP38-2 No. 2556, purchased by the Durham and Southern Railway in 1972 as their No. 2000, which later became Seaboard Coast Line No. 556. This train originates at CSX’s Brunswick, MD yard and travels east on the former B&O Metropolitan Sub to the Dickerson Generating Station two miles west of Dickerson, MD where is it loaded with ash from the plant’s two coal-burning electrical generators. The loaded cars are later taken back to Brunswick and then picked up by train Q415 and taken to North Carolina where the ash is dumped. Train Q416 later transports the empty cars back to Brunswick where the cycle begins again.
