A Kansas City Southern freight rumbles across the levy and bridges over Lake Texana, near Edna Texas. This lake forms an 11,000 acre reservoir on the Navidad River. There are boat ramps picnic sites and nature trails here as well as the KCS mainline to Corpus Christi and beyond to Laredo and Mexico. Edna has an interesting history. It was built in 1824 on a grant from the Mexican Government through Stephen E. Austin. At the last census, almost 5500 folks called Edna, home. It served as a commissary for Italian laborers on the New York, Texas and Mexican Railway. The town was first called “Macaroni Station”. When part of the Southern Pacific the line was usually referred to as the Macaroni line, and still is today after rebuilding by the Kansas City Southern.
