The Texas, Gonzales and Northern RR new GP40s switch Gonzales Texas.

Gonzales has a storied history in Texas. It was established in 1825 by Green DeWitt and named for Rafael Gonzales, the Governor of Coahuila y Tejas. Gonzales is referred to as the “Lexington of Texas”, being the site of the first skirmish of the war of Texas Independence in 1835. The Mexican government had given Gonzales a small cannon to help ward off Indian raids. As the political situation deteriated, the Mexican government demanded the return of the cannon.

Soon there was a white flag, with the image of the cannon and the words “COME AND TAKE IT. The Mexican government dispatched 100 soldiers to do just that. They were met by a group of 18 men from Gonzales, the soldiers retreated and the cannon became a powerful symbol to Texans.

The locomotives have a depiction to the Gonzales flag on the cab.
