Amtrak’s east bound Capitol Limited roars out of Carothers Tunnel on CSX’s Magnolia Cutoff three miles east of Paw Paw, WV on August 15, 2020.

Note the notching on the portal of the tunnel, which done to increase the vertical clearance of this and the other three tunnels on the Magnolia Cutoff
in 2011-2012. The enlargements were done as part of CSX’s National Gateway Project which permit CSX to run double stack and other high-clearance
trains on this line between eastern ports and the Midwest. A vertical clearance of at least 21 feet is required to enable double stack trains to pass
through the tunnels.
