During peak seasons the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic’s trains carry almost twice as many passengers as they do in the off-season periods. To ensure the longer trains have enough power to make it up the four percent grade from Chama, NM to the 10,022 foot summit at Cumbres Pass three engines are usually coupled onto the head end. Most of the weekend trips in September 2006 had unusually high passenger loads which required three engines. The September 9th trip had K-36s Nos. 483 and 487, and K-37 No. 497, all built by Baldwin Locomotive Works. This shot was taken a half mile east of the first grade crossing leaving Chama.
