Consolidation of Regional railroads

This weeks trainnews carries many stories of what I call regional creep; class 1s acquiring regional railroads.

While it may make business sense how does it play for the RR employees, does the acquiring RR have to maintain negotiated contract terms with the new employees?

Also what happens if the new employee are non union?
