VIA Rail’s “Ocean” and "Chaleur" train prepare to depart the Matapedia, Quebec station on February 11, 1992. On the left is the “Ocean”, the "Chaleur" is on the right. These trains ran coupled together east bound from Montreal, with the "Chaleur" coupled behind the “Ocean”. The trains were split at Matapedia, with the “Ocean” continuing east to Halifax, Nova Scotia and the "Chaleur" north to Gaspé on the tip of the Gaspé Peninsula. On August 22, 2013, Via Rail announced that as a result of rail infrastructure problems, including rail corrosion and malfunctioning crossing signals, service between Matapédia and Gaspé would be suspended. About a month later buses were substituted for the rail service. In May 2017, the Québec government announced it would spend $100 million to repair the rail line from Matapedia to Gaspé. Since then, some freight service has resumed, however passenger service is still suspended.
