A west bound Norfolk Southern train of coal empties passes American flags and a sign reading “Thank You Railroaders” at the west portal of the Allegheny Tunnel at Gallitzin, PA on August 14, 2020. Such gestures are a nice token of appreciation to Norfolk Southern employees who have worked long hours to transport vital cargo during the corona virus pandemic. Allegheny Tunnel was completed by the PRR as a single track bore in 1854. Conrail enlarged and double tracked the tunnel in 1995 to accommodate double stack trains. The tunnel to the left, Gallitzin Tunnel, was abandoned when the enlarged Allegheny Tunnel was placed back in service.
