Former Norfolk and Western Class J No. 611 begins its climb up legendary Saluda Grade in the fall of 1992. In a few moments it will stall, but the huge 4-8-4 quickly regained traction and made it to the top of the grade at the town of Saluda, NC. Saluda Grade is the steepest standard gauge mainline in the U.S., with an average grade of 4.24 percent for 2.6 miles and maximum of 4.9% for about 300 feet. It is located between Melrose, NC at the bottom of the grade and Saluda at the summit. Norfolk Southern suspended freight traffic between East Flat Rock, NC and Landrum, SC in December 2001, thus ceasing operations on Saluda Grade.

"Moderated" was spelled "monderated". Monde is world in french. So it rather sounds like "influenced by the world", and perhaps it is.
