A Cedar Rapids and Iowa City Railway MP15DC and a slug unit switches a cut of coal cars at their Smith Dows Yard in Fairfax, Iowa on June 8, 2012. The CRANDIC, as it is more commonly called, is a 60-mile regional railroad providing freight rail service in the Cedar Rapids to Iowa City corridor. CRANDIC connects with two Class Is, UP and CN, and two regionals, Iowa Interstate and Iowa Northern. The CRANDIC began as an electric interurban railroad in 1904 between Cedar Rapids and Iowa City. It ran its last passenger train in 1953, which was a charter for railfans.
