Before BNSF placed tight restrictions on access to Abo Canyon when construction of the second track through the canyon began in 2007 railfans had free access to the outstanding photo locations. I was fortunate to have made two trips to Abo Canyon, in 1995 and 2002 before the restrictions were put in place. Teresa and I had sunny weather on both trips and saw over 50 trains each day. On the 1995 trip lots of engines were painted in the Santa Fe’s in the Santa Fe’s legendary red and silver “War Bonnet” scheme. This is an east bound manifest train crossing bridge 3 with General Electric C41-8Ws Nos.948 and 943 painted in the “War Bonnet” scheme on September 24, 1995. Trailing behind the Warbonnets are three older EMD units.
