From time to time, I assign myself a photographic project. The idea is to learn something new and then to capture the new knowledge photographically. Hence, The Maximilian Project.

These native sunflowers that grow along the right of way in most parts of North America are called Maximilian Sunflowers (Heliathus maximiliai). Prince Alexander Philippe Maximilian zu Weid-Neuweid was born in Germany in September 17822 and died in February 1867. He was a noted naturalist, ethnographer and explorer. He traveled extensively in both North and South America. The plants, which can grow to eight feet and produce many flowers are named for him. The are frequently seen in colonies or drifts as seen here. There is much to learn about the trackside plants and fauna.

This spot is the east switch of Uvalde Siding in Uvalde Texas. Uvalde was the home of John Nance “Catus Jack” Garner, a Vice President in the Franklin Roosevelt administration.
