A pair of Norfolk Southern SD40Es shove a heavy NS manifest train eastbound up the steep grade between Cresson and Gallitzin, PA on February 10, 2017. This location is on the former PRR’s Pittsburgh Line 11 miles west of Altoona, PA. Like other railroads, NS experienced difficulties with their fleet of EMD SD50’s, which included unreliable electrical systems combined with engine failures and excessive vibration. To resolve these issues, in 2008 NS management decided to significantly remanufacture the SD50s to produce engines that were more reliable and had longer service lives. The upgrades included rebuilt 16-645 prime movers, EM2000 microprocessors, new electrical components, and refurbished cabs equipped with air conditioning. The vintage PRR-era signal bridge equipped with color position light signals was replaced over ten years ago.
