Luling Texas grows a lot of watermelons. In 1954 the Luling Watermelon Thump had its beginnings. The celebration grew, and now includes a carnival, concerts and the election of the “Thump Queen” to preside over the venue. It’s a big deal for these young women, with parades and highlights of their scholastic and civic accomplishments.
The town of about 5,000 folks hosts about 30,000 folks during the late June festival. Years ago, the ripeness of a watermelon was determined by giving it a good thump, and, if the sound was right, you knew that it would be tasty.The 2023 “Thump Queen” is Samantha Ordonez, who is sponsored by the local Lions Club.
