EX-PENN CENTRAL DIESELS CARRY ON – A pair of GP38-2s, Nos. 5643 and 5636, leads a west bound Norfolk Southern local across 4th street in Huntingdon, PA on August 12, 2020. These 51-year old diesels were delivered to the Penn Central Railroad as Nos. 7691 and 7692 respectively in June 1969 as GP38s and were acquired by Norfolk Southern during the breakup of Conrail in 1999. Starting in 2000, Norfolk Southern began upgrading GP38s and GP38ACs to GP38-2s at their Juniata Shops in Altoona, PA and by 2005 over 100 such upgrades were completed. Both of the above units are equipped with Positive Train Control so they can be leaders. In this age of seeing a steady parade of wide nose modern diesels it is refreshing to see standard nose diesels still plying the rails.
